Raiders’ Davis Sounds Off

Compiled From Wire Services

Raiders owner Al Davis ridiculed the $198 million deal that brought his club back to Oakland last year, but refused to comment on the sagging team or the job security of coach Mike White.

In his first public comments since the start of the season, the 67-year-old Davis also denied rumors of heart trouble.

The Raiders have sold out only one home game since the Oakland Coliseum was renovated. That $130 million renovation was part of the 16-year deal that lured the team back to Oakland.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer has benched quarterback Steve Bono in favor of backup Rich Gannon.

The Green Bay Packers’ sputtering offense gets a shot in arm this week with the return of wide receiver Antonio Freeman.

Rookie cornerback Tyrone Williams of the Green Bay Packers won’t have to begin serving a six-month jail sentence Dec. 3 in connection with a 1994 shooting incident. The judge who sentenced Williams last week decided Tuesday that the former Nebraska player could remain free on $5,000 bond until the state Court of Appeals reviews the case.
