A state appeals court has ruled that a female jockey who was paralyzed from the waist down in a 1992 racing accident can sue the track operators for negligence.

Jockey Sidney Underwood, 33, was injured June 19, 1992, while riding in a race at Atlantic City Race Course. Her mount fell on the backstretch, slamming her to the track.

Underwood and her lawyer, Michael D. Scottland, contend poor lighting cast a shadow across the track that spooked the horse and caused it to try to stop.

Nigerian soccer star Nwankwo Kanu had successful heart surgery in Cleveland, and his Italian club says it is too early to tell if he will be able to play again.

The 4-hour operation, to correct a weak aortic valve, took place at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation on Monday. News of the surgery was delayed at the request of the 20-year-old player, and a spokesman for the clinic said he had no information on Kanu.

Carencro, La., police accepted LSU tailback Kevin Faulk’s apology for getting into a fight with officers who tried to detain him. But the city wants more, nearly $15,000.

Officer Andrew Hubbard needed $12,387.20 in medical treatment for foot and knee injuries sustained when he fell during the scuffle, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in state district court in Lafayette.
