Time Ripe For New Post Falls School
The decision by Post Falls School District officials to try a third time to pass a bond for a new high school has irritated some opponents. Why, they wonder, can’t school administrators take a hint?
Indeed, the district can.
In March, when the $15.8 million bond issue failed for the second time, support was strong and growing. Some 63 percent of those who voted last spring favored the bond, a dramatic increase from the dismal 49 percent approval given two years ago.
Unfortunately, Idaho’s unfair supermajority requirement thwarted the clear will of the district’s patrons. The measure, which needs two-thirds approval, failed for a lack of 200 “yes” votes.
The Spokesman-Review editorial board believes good public schools are crucial to our region’s future. We endorse this bond issue, again, and also support a second ballot measure for a $1.95 million sports complex. Sports programs are an integral part of the learning experience and community pride.
Post Falls schools are seriously overcrowded, with students pouring into the district regularly. Sooner or later, the district will have to build a new high school. It should approve the project now and take advantage of low construction costs and interest rates.
