Pattern Continues: Viks, 1-0 Chambers Nets The Only Goal As Cda Sweeps Season Series From Lake City
It’s all or nothing when Coeur d’Alene and Lake City meet in girls soccer. The loser had been shut out in the last four meetings, the streak continuing Friday as the Vikings got past the visiting Timberwolves 1-0.
The lone goal came 36 minutes into the first half as Stacey Chambers lofted a shot high over Lake City goalkeeper Jeanne Russell. Russell got turned around and tried to poke the ball over the goal, but it hit off the crossbar and rolled in.
“It was a really good shot and I couldn’t quite get it,” Russell said.
The shot came after an incredible sequence 25 minutes into the game where three consecutive Vikings shots hit parts of the goal and bounced out.
“We were all over the goal, but couldn’t get any shots to go,” Vikings coach David Tabakman said.
The game was all Coeur d’Alene as the Vikings outshot the T-Wolves 30-6. Russell was under attack the whole game and continually turned away shots that could have easily gone in.
“Jeanne is really our saving grace,” Lake City coach Jim Facciano said.
The best battle of the game was between Russell and Janee Andre, the Vikings’ outstanding freshman striker. On five different occasions, Russell either ran out of goal to stop shots or Andre shot wide on one-on-one situations.
“I was ready to play today and Janee did a nice job also,” Russell said.
The T-Wolves couldn’t get their offense going, due to poor passing and stellar defense by the Vikings.
“I kept telling the girls to get rid of the ball, but the passing was sloppy,” Facciano said.
Tabakman said he was pleased with the play of his fullbacks and felt the key to victory was the Vikings’ ability to contain the ball.
That led to many scoring opportunities while the T-Wolves were constantly on the defensive.
“We found ourselves putting out fires the whole time and we couldn’t get any started,” Facciano said.
The Vikings lead the North Idaho Soccer League with a 9-1-1 record and face second-place Sandpoint next week at home. Tabakman said his team will not practice Monday, resting up after a week that included three league victories.
Lake City (5-4-2), which dropped both cross-town matches for the first time, now is focusing on success at district, said Facciano.
If the two meet for a third time this year at district, no one should be surprised if the result is a shutout.
