Obituaries

Vester Nelson Lamont, Wash.

Service for Vester C. Nelson, 83, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sprague (Wash.) Community Church. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nelson died Thursday at Spokane Valley Samaritan Village Care Center.

He was the longtime manager of the Lamont Grain Growers, where he worked for more than 40 years. He also served on the Lamont Town Council for many years.

He was a member of the Sprague Masonic Lodge, the Colfax Elks Lodge and the Cougar Club. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by two wives, Gladys (Giffing) Nelson, who died in 1971, and Verda (Kelly) Nelson, who died in 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise Nelson; a son, Don Nelson of Lamont; a daughter, Joan Nelson of Spokane; numerous stepchildren, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lamont Community Center or the Lamont Community Church.

George Wuesthoff Chewelah, Wash.

Service for George Ernest Wuesthoff, 83, is planned for 11 a.m. today at the United Church of Christ in Chewelah. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. Wuesthoff died Thursday at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane.

In 1930 he moved to the Chewelah area from Selah, Wash. His family farmed near Valley, Wash., and then bought a ranch on Chewelah Creek.

In 1936, he married Cladine Williams. She died in 1983.

He married Dorothy (Nussbaum) Wise, a longtime friend, in 1983.

Mr. Wuesthoff worked at Northwest Magnesite for 33 years, and then worked as a heavy equipment repairman at Byrne Machinery in Spokane.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dennis Wuesthoff Sr., of Waitts Lake, Wash., and Ken Wuesthoff of Chewelah; a daughter, Linda Daniels of Chewelah; four stepchildren; a sister, Helen Blue of Wenatchee; five brothers, Bill Wuesthoff of Davenport, Wash., Bob and Fred Wuesthoff, both of Chewelah, Cliff Wuesthoff of Bellevue, Wash., and Ray Wuesthoff of Millcreek, Wash.; seven grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

Arnold ‘Mike’ Nielsen Sequim, Wash.

Service for Arnold G. “Mike” Nielsen, a former Spokane and Pullman resident, was Sept. 22.

Born in Audubon, Iowa, Mr. Nielsen died Sept. 11. He was 75.

He graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, with a degree in business administration and attended the Pacific Coast Banking School.

In 1944 he married Jean Hurst in Washington, D.C.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Nielsen worked for Seafirst Bank from 1947 until 1980 and retired as a vice president. From 1980 to 1988, he continued working for Seafirst Trust Department in the Sequim area.

He had lived in Cheney in the early 1950s and in Pullman from 1953 to 1962. He then moved to Seattle, Vancouver, Wash., and Bainbridge Island, Wash. He moved to Spokane in 1974 and to Port Angeles, Wash., in 1980.

He and his wife had lived in Sequim since 1982.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mike Nielsen of Sequim and Steve Nielsen of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Jana Bullivant of Spokane; a sister, Loretta Christensen of Kimballton, Iowa; and six grandchildren.

Trula (York) Powers Spokane

Memorial service for Trula Geneva York Powers, 102, was Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Born in Clearwater, Idaho, Mrs. Powers died Thursday.

She was a country school teacher in Stites, Idaho, and had lived in Spokane for more than 42 years.

Mrs. Powers was a member of the Spokane Rose Society and the Baptist Church.

Her husband, Glenn Powers, died in 1949.

She is survived by two sons, Roland Powers of Clarkston, Wash., and K.J. “Julian” Powers of Spokane; three daughters, Cleo Funke of Coeur d’Alene, Joyce Lockard of Pennsylvania and Diane Wyers of Portland; 24 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
