Man Killed Trying To Outrun Train

Associated Press

One man was killed and another was injured when they were hit by a freight train as they were trying to cross downtown railroad tracks.

Paul Berner, 21, was dead at the scene Sunday night, said Lt. Nick Meisch of Snohomish County Fire District 28.

Roy Doty, 27, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was treated for severe lacerations.

The two Index men were on foot and tried to cross the tracks ahead of the train although crossing gates were down and lights were flashing, Meisch said.

“They saw the train and tried to run in front of it,” he said.

“They just made a bad mistake.”
