Campaign ‘96

Compiled By Jim Camden From Staf

Office politics

The Dole-Kemp campaign put down roots and threw down a challenge late last month when it opened a headquarters in downtown Spokane: “I doubt you will see the Clinton/Gore campaign open any official office east of downtown Seattle,” said state exec director Kraig Naasz … Well, oh yeah? replied the Clinton/Gore folks. They were in town last week, albeit with less fanfare, to set up shop in space they share with the Judy Olson campaign … One advantage the Republicans have is the coordinated Democratic campaign office is way too crowded for debate-watching parties.

A banner year?

Speaking of headquarters, the county GOP apparently went a little overboard in decorating the Great Western building for its grand opening last Friday. Banners everywhere … They had to be taken down after the building manager received complaints, a source said.

Keep checking, it’s in the mail

Washington state voter guides will be hitting the mailboxes in the next 10 days. Because of the many different legislative districts, congressional districts and other government subdivisions, the state actually has to print 21 different editions … The secretary of state’s office hopes to get them in the mail by the time the absentee ballots start going out on Oct. 16. If you don’t get one by Oct. 23, call the state Voter Hot Line at 1-800-448-4881.
