Netanyahus’ Ex-Nanny Sues Immigrant From South Africa Claims ‘Slave’ Conditions, But Rebuttal Says She ‘Neglected Household’
Sarah Netanyahu’s former live-in nanny has filed suit against Israel’s first lady for $27,085 in back pay, accusing Netanyahu of forcing her to work up to 18 hours a day and treating her like a “slave.”
Tanya Shaw, a 21-year-old immigrant from South Africa, made headlines in July by telling newspapers that Sarah Netanyahu tossed her into the street with her belongings after she burned a pot of soup.
In the suit filed Thursday, Shaw said Netanyahu ordered her to cook for the family late at night, refused to give her time off and “demanded perfection in every task.”
Shaw “was treated coldly by Mrs. Netanyahu, as if she were a slave,” it said. “She suffered quietly, without opening her mouth … to please Mrs. Netanyahu and not to give her a reason to fire her.”
A rebuttal submitted by Sarah Netanyahu’s lawyers said Shaw, far from being forced to work long hours, “neglected the household.”
“Shaw spent many hours of the day in her room resting, doing her personal business and conducting long phone calls from a phone installed in her bedroom,” the rebuttal said.
Now, it said, Shaw was trying to get “huge amounts of money she is not entitled to, while exploiting the fact that Mrs. Netanyahu is the wife of the prime minister.”
Sarah Netanyahu also said labor laws stipulating maximum hours and time off did not apply to live-in baby sitters.
Shaw claimed the Netanyahus never paid her for her last month of employment and owed her overtime for long work days.
Shaw’s lawyer, Moshe Zingel, said labor laws do apply to live-in baby sitters.
The case will be heard in court in the next month.
