Teams Will Zero In On East Valley For Volleyball Title
East Valley is the target during title week next week in Frontier League volleyball.
The unbeaten Knights play their closest challengers when they travel to Colville on Tuesday and host Pullman on Thursday.
Pullman is currently a game behind the Knights and Colville is two games back. Those two teams play in Colville today.
On Tuesday, EV had little trouble with Clarkston, starting slow the first two games but finishing fast during 15-5, 15-2, 15-5 wins.
It took forever for the teams to score in game one before EV broke a 1-1 tie with three points. Trailing 2-0 in game two, the Knights scored the final 15 points, including seven straight while Jenny Kann was serving.
In game three, EV broke a 1-1 tie with 12 straight points before Clarkston mounted a brief rally.
The team played relatively mistake-free showed the balance that has characterized the 8-0 Knights.
They got between four and five kills from six different players, including Kristin Holleran and Christie Grochowski.
Deb Asbury put down 11 serves, including four aces. Kann and Lescia Myers served nine points each.
Kann and Jennifer Tilton each had 12 assists.
Titans find missing ingredients
In winning its first football game this season, University High accomplished something that has been missing much of the year.
The opportunistic Titans came from behind.
They trailed North Central 14-6 at halftime but parlayed three of five fumble recoveries into points during a 31-27 victory.
NC gained more than 400 yards of offense, including 293 yards rushing to 281 by U-Hi. Between them the teams had 10 turnovers.
But two third-quarter touchdowns put U-Hi ahead 21-14 and the Titans broke a 21-21 deadlock with a 50-yard touchdown reception by Chris McMurtry from Rob Bartlett and Kelly Tifft’s third field goal of the night.
Bartlett had missed last week’s game because of a shoulder injury. His effort was pretty, completing 8 of 27 passes, but it was effective. He totaled 160 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
Tim Buchanan rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries and the other score.
Big week looms for CV volleyball
Central Valley’s volleyball team can reach the district playoffs for the first time since 1991 with wins at University Tuesday and at home against North Central on Wednesday.
