Bergeson Will Keep Schools Thriving
The race for state Superintendent of Public Instruction is this simple: If you value schools and want to see them improved, vote for Terry Bergeson.
That’s where this newspaper’s endorsement goes, because a vote for her opponent would send this state’s fine education system reeling. We have a chance now to go forward, to an improved system of quality education for all, or backwards, to an unrecognizable jumble of haves and have nots.
Bergeson can bring the state forward. She has an uncommon blend of experience over her 30-year commitment to education. As a teacher, union leader, assistant superintendent and education reform leader, Bergeson has seen all sides of every problem - and has specific, well-grounded plans to solve them.
Her opponent, Ron Taber, prefers to tear the system apart. He’s already started by pushing Initiative 173, a plan that would allow tax money to be used at private schools. It’s a bad idea, and only one of many that Taber would use to dismantle public education.
Bergeson, instead, has the experience, talent and savvy to continue education reform and make Washington schools among the best in the country. She has the political and community backing to be effective, and a teacher’s heart to be empowering.
