Obituaries

James ‘Ed’ Dawson Lewiston

Service for James “Ed” Dawson, 62, will be today at 11 a.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Graveside service will be at the Emida Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Dawson, who was born in St. Maries, died Monday.

He graduated from St. Maries High School, then worked in the timber industry. He was also a milkman.

Mr. Dawson moved to Moscow and worked for Mason-Ehrman Wholesale Grocers for 10 years and also had worked at grocery stores in Moscow and Colfax, Wash.

He later worked at Chuck’s Chevron in Moscow and for Bennet’s and Helbling Bros. in Moscow.

He retired to Lewiston a year and a half ago.

Mr. Dawson was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Wana; five children, Gary of Woodland, Wash., James of Twin Falls, Idaho, Debbie Huffman of Pullman, Teresa Woolverton of Potlatch, Idaho, and Nancy Warner of Lewiston; a brother, Corey Dawson of Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.

Sally Edwards Deer Park

No service will be held for Sally A. Edwards, 78, at her request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Edwards, who died Saturday, was born in Biddeford, Maine.

She lived in Alaska for many years and worked as an expediter for the Air Force in communications and electronics. She retired in 1974 and had lived in Deer Park for 20 years.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, Howard; two sisters, Helen Uren of Fennimore, Wis., and Josephine Bourre of Sanford, Maine; and a brother, Julius Regina of New York.

James ‘Jay’ Gilliam Spokane

Memorial service for James. F. “Jay” Gilliam, 45, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gilliam, who was born in Prosser, Wash., died Wednesday.

He grew up in Grandview, Wash., and graduated from high school there. He attended Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University.

He worked for E.J. Bartells Co. of Spokane and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He was a 10-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Gilliam is survived by his wife, Jan; three daughters, Jayme, Jennifer and Katie, all at home; and his mother, Isabel Gilliam, and a sister, Sandra Doll, both of Yakima.

Greta Lee Newport, Wash.

Graveside service for Greta M. Lee, 88, will be at 10 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Germany, she died Tuesday at the Pend Oreille Pines Nursing Home in Newport. In 1947, she married Albert Lee in Coeur d’Alene. She previously lived in Chattaroy and for the past 12 years she had lived in Newport.

She was a member of the White Rose Ladies Fellowship and taught Bible school.

Survivors include her husband; a brother, Herman Menke of Newport; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.

Francis ‘Skee’ Hansen Spokane

Service for Francis M. “Frank” “Skee” Hansen, 75, will be at 10 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Freeze Cemetery in Potlatch, Idaho.

Mr. Hansen, who was born in Onaway, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He served in the Navy’s Seabees during World War II and had lived in Spokane for 50 years. He was a driver for heavy-haul trucking companies in the Spokane area.

He was a member of Spokane Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 and Teamsters Union Local 690.

Mr. Hansen is survived by two sons, Dan and Don Hansen, both of Spokane; a brother, Donald Hansen of Spokane; two sisters, Dorothy Cada of Potlatch, Idaho, and Geneal Bircher of Princeton, Idaho; three granddaughters and a great-grandson; and a special friend, Sharon Spurgeon of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ethel Gibbons Spokane

Memorial service for Ethel B. Gibbons, 65, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gibbons, who died Wednesday, was born in Newfoundland.

In 1962 she married James Gibbons.

She was a member of St. John’s Cathedral and was past president of the Choir Guild and former director of the Lectors Program. She was also an office and gift shop volunteer at the cathedral.

Mrs. Gibbons is survived by her husband; three sons, Michael, Leo “Gene” and Edmund “Reece” Gibbons, all of Spokane; a daughter, Rosalind Alland of Spokane; a brother, Lewis Anderson of Toronto; a sister, Patricia Short of Newfoundland; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Helene Gabler Spokane

Private service will be held for Helene Gabler. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gabler, 90, died Monday.

She was born in Germany and had lived in Spokane for 48 years.

Her husband, Walter Gabler, died in 1983.

She is survived by a son, Walter Gabler of Renton, Wash.; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ethel Brown Colville, Wash.

Visitation for Ethel Gladys Brown, 90, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Mrs. Brown, a homemaker, died Tuesday.

She was born in Green Bluff and had lived in Spokane until 1988, when she moved to Colville.

Her husband of 63 years, Edgar Brown, died in 1989.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell Cowan Spokane

Service for Russell V. Cowan, 78, will be at 11 a.m. today Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Mr. Cowan, a 56-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He was born in Harrison, Idaho.

He served in the Navy during World War II and retired from the Spokane School District maintenance department.

He was a member of Fowler United Methodist Church, Teamsters Union Local 690 and the Pistols ‘n Petticoats Square Dance Club.

Mr. Cowan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace Cowan; two sons, Ron Cowan of Los Angeles and Jim Cowan of Spokane; a brother, George Cowan of Coeur d’Alene; two half-sisters, Helen Hendrix of Spokane and Charlotte Colman of New York City; a half-brother, Bill Cowan of Spokane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fowler United Methodist Church.

Jeannette Mills Coeur d’Alene

Service for Jeannette Mary Mills, 84, will be today at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Mills, who was born in Montana, died Wednesday.

She moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1922 and owned Jeannette’s Beauty Shop from 1932 to 1946. She later worked for English Funeral Chapel as a hairdresser for 35 years.

Mrs. Mills was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a former member of the Naomi Rebekah Lodge in Coeur d’Alene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit, in 1974. Survivors include three sons, Ronald and Sherrild Mills, both of Coeur d’Alene, and David Mills of Boise; a daughter, Margaret Gibson of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Charles Mellor of Clarkston, Wash.; a sister, Margaret McLean of Sunnyside, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Chester Colwell Spokane

Memorial service for Chester Thomas Colwell, 69, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Colwell, who was born in Spokane, died Monday. He graduated from Rogers High School and served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Shirley Wendt in Spokane in 1947.

He worked in the beverage distribution industry for more than 40 years and retired in 1988 from B & B Distributors.

Mr. Colwell was a member of the downtown Lions Club and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Margaret Colwell and Dianne Agee, both of Spokane; a sister, Dorothy Cooper of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Oliver Silfvast Page, Idaho

Memorial service for Oliver W. Silfvast, 86, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Private inurnment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Silfvast, who was born in Wyoming, died Thursday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1917 from Montana and graduated from Mullan (Idaho) High School in 1928. He went on to receive a business degree from the University of Montana in 1933.

He had worked for Asarco Mining Co. in Mullan before being employed by the Bunker Hill Co. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Silfvast had also worked as an accountant for various businesses and was a partner in Deal Distributing Co.

He had played the violin for many years and was a member of The Silver Valley Band in the 1970s. He was a charter member of the Kellogg Elks Lodge and had served as treasurer for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Martha; a son, Roger Silfvast of Spokane; a sister, Elsie Foster of New Mexico; and one granddaughter, Brittany.

Cecil Cash Spokane

Private memorial service and inurnment for Cecil Vernon Cash, 87, will be at Greenwood Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cash, who died Thursday, was born in Grangeville, Idaho, and had lived in Spokane for 55 years.

He worked as a logger and log hauler in Pend Oreille County in the 1930s. He later moved to Spokane where he worked for Kaiser Aluminum at Trentwood and retired in 1974.

Mr. Cash is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia; two daughters, Evelyn Flickinger of Belfair, Wash., and Dorothy Palmer of Spokane; two sons, Larry Cash of Poulsbo, Wash., and Leonard Cash of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Maude Lecoultre St. Maries

Private family service for Maude Lecoultre, 91, has been held. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lecoultre, who was born in St. Maries, died Tuesday.

She grew up in the St. Maries area and later lived in St. Joe City, Idaho, where she was a homemaker. She moved back to St. Maries in 1942.

Mrs. Lecoultre was preceded in death by her husband, Adamir, in 1974. Survivors include a son, Roland LeCoultre of St. Maries; a daughter, Maxine Spooner of St. Maries; two brothers, Walter and Robert Patterson, both of St. Maries; four sisters, Agnes Studer of St. Maries, Olga Anderson of Spokane, Yvonne Patterson of Moscow and Elizabeth Good of California; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
