Armed Man Flees Store After Failing To Open Cash Register

From Staff And Wire Reports

A hooded man armed with a handgun held up a convenience store Friday afternoon, but escaped without any money after he could not get the cash register open.

The would-be robber, described as black and in his late 20s, entered the Exxon Qwik Stop, 1001 E. Wellesley, about 4:30 p.m. and walked behind the counter.

While the store clerk was in another part of the store, the man pulled a hood over his face and tried to open the cash register.

When the clerk came in and asked what he was doing, the man pulled out the handgun and ordered him into a storage cooler.

The man was gone when the clerk stepped out of the cooler a few minutes later. The cash register was locked and no money was taken.

Witnesses saw the man run from the store, police said. He was last seen headed east on Broad Street.
