Broncos Still Steaming
The great Chop-Block Controversy just won’t die.
One day after Kansas City coach Marty Schottenheimer angrily defended his team’s blocking techniques on a play that injured Denver cornerback Lionel Washington on Sunday, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he received an apology from Schottenheimer for another incident in that game.
“He let me know how he felt about the block on Lionel Washington,” Shanahan said. “I reviewed with Marty how I felt about Dale Carter’s block on Darrius Johnson.”
The Carter-Johnson incident occurred nine plays after the injury to Washington. Carter, a Pro Bowl cornerback and part-time wide receiver, was on offense and going against Johnson, a rookie cornerback. On third-and-25, Carter ran down the right side and threw a low block at Johnson. Steve Bono completed a 6-yard pass to tight end Reggie Johnson on the play.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Andre Rison, who had guaranteed a victory over Cincinnati, criticized what he said was coach Tom Coughlin’s negative coaching style after the Jaguars’ loss to the Bengals.
“There’s a relationship, but there’s so much of an intimidating relationship,” Rison said. “We have chatter among ourselves, but when we all group up and we’re surrounded by generals who run the ship, everybody condenses themselves. They go into a little box and we play tight, we play emotionless.”
