Council Oks Apartments

A developer’s plans to build apartments on the Sunset Hill withstood a neighborhood’s fight to keep the complexes out.

The Spokane City Council voted unanimously to deny the Carousel Lane Neighborhood Association’s appeal of the development’s approval.

“I must … affirm the decision of the hearing examiner,” said Councilwoman Roberta Greene. She added that the council can overturn a decision only if members find the hearing examiner made an error in law or fact.

Ron McCloskey plans to build 48 apartments on three acres along Westcliff Drive, north and east of the Indian Canyon Golf Course.

The apartments would be in four buildings along with eight separate garage structures.

Neighbors argued the apartments didn’t fit the area’s character.

“These are always very difficult,” said Councilwoman Phyllis Holmes. “This is a very pretty neighborhood.”

Holmes added that buffers and screening should help ease neighbors’ concerns.
