Earthquakes Hit Two Japanese Islands

Two moderate earthquakes rocked small islands south of Tokyo early today. There were no reports of damage or injury.

The quakes occurred four hours apart, and had preliminary magnitudes of 4.8 and 3.5.

The first was centered below the sea floor near the island of Hachijo-jima; the second shook Niijima and Kozu islands.
