Frank Uebelacker Elma, Wash.

Service for Frank L. Uebelacker, 65, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Whiteside Funeral Chapel in Elma. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Elma.

Mr. Uebelacker, a former Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He was born in Ellensburg and graduated from high school in Ellensburg. He served in the Air Force in the early 1950s.

He worked as a vendor for Canteen in Spokane for 30 years and retired in 1993. He also worked as a bartender for the Eagles Lodge in Spokane for 10 years and owned the Cozy Inn Tavern with his wife, Verna (Scott) Uebelacker, for 15 years.

He moved to Elma three years ago.

Mr. Uebelacker was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and managed the American Legion in Spokane for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years; two sons, Stan and Randy Kenworthy, both of Spokane; three daughters, Debra Monahan of Billings, Mont., Juanita Dilley of Elma and Kimberly Rupert of Spokane; two brothers, William Uebelacker of Milwaukie, Ore., and Donald Uebelacker of Yakima; and 12 grandchildren.

Naomi Meyer Spokane

Visitation for Naomi L. Meyer, 82, will be held Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Meyer, who was born in Missouri, died Tuesday.

She was raised and educated in Rathdrum, Idaho, where she graduated from high school. She later farmed before moving to Spokane in 1958.

Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lilac City Travel Club and the Spokane Valley Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She had also been active in the Rathdrum, Idaho, community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Norma Nicolson of California, and Carol Stevens of Spokane; brother, Johns Stevens of Sumner, Wash.; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Jack ‘Jack Hammer’ Coghlan Spokane

At his request, no service will be held for Jack “Jack Hammer” Coghlan. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Coghlan, 77, died Sunday.

He was born in Troy, Idaho, and had lived in Spokane for more than 65 years. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps starting in 1937.

He was a commercial construction laborer and worked on Holy Names Convent, Grand Coulee Dam, the Parkade and St. John’s Cathedral.

In 1969, he worked at the Kwajalein Test Site in the Marshall Islands.

Mr. Coghlan was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 161, Eagles Lodge No. 2, Elks Lodge No. 228, the Brotherhood of Friends, the National Rifle Association and Laborers International Union Local No. 238.

He was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Coghlan of Spokane; a sister, Violette Walsh of San Diego; and a brother, Frank Pilant of Spokane.

Robert Ray Spokane

Graveside service for Robert Ray, 77, is set for 3 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace Mausoleum. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Fairbault, Minn., Mr. Ray died Friday.

He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a meat cutter. He owned Greenough’s and was employed at Sid’s Lincoln Heights Grocery, the Main and Post Market, and a Safeway store.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Ray was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Union Local 494 and the International Order of Odd Fellows.

His wife, Olive Ray, died in 1993.

He is survived by a son, James Ray of Spokane; a brother, Jervisa Ray of Little Falls, Minn.; and a granddaughter.

Katie Jessup Olympia

Rosary for Katie Colleen Jessup, 19, was Wednesday at All Saints Catholic Church in Puyallup, Wash. Service will be at 1 p.m. today at the church. Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Jessup, a former Spokane resident, died Sunday from injuries suffered in an auto accident early that day in Tacoma.

She was born in Spokane and moved to the Lacey, Wash., area six years ago. She graduated from high school in Lacey in 1995 and was a student at Fort Steilacoom Community College in Olympia.

Survivors include her father, Paul Jessup of Spokane; her mother, Trudy Jessup of Lacey, Wash.; and a brother, Chad Jessup of Lacey.

Wiley ‘Slim’ Anderson Spokane

Graveside service for Wiley V. “Slim” Anderson, 81, was Wednesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in Freeman, died Monday.

He was a self-employed carpenter and owned the Worley Bar in Worley, Idaho, from 1965 to 1970.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had lived in Spokane for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lily Anderson, at home; a son, Ronald Anderson and a daughter, Leila Berglund, both of Spokane; a brother, Harvey Anderson of Napa, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Savage Spokane

Memorial service for Kenneth E. Savage, 81, will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment.

Born in Kansas City, Mr. Savage died Tuesday.

He graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle and attended the University of Washington.

He moved to Spokane and worked at General Electric as an electrical engineer for 25 years. He also worked with Skyline Electric of Seattle while living in Spokane.

He was a 44-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Savage was a member of International Electrical Inspectors and the Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Savage; a son, David Savage of Pullman; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Rogers of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Thomas ‘Fat Man’ Hynson Spokane

Visitation for Thomas “Fat Man” Hynson, 81, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Hynson, who died Sunday, was born in Karnack, Texas.

After working for the railroad, he moved to Spokane 48 years ago and worked in construction.

His wife, Ivey, died in 1981.

He is survived by a son, Nolan Henson of Beaumont, Texas; a sister, Bessie Dukes of Karnack; and a granddaughter.

Etta Mae Messer Spokane

Service for Etta Mae Messer, 91, is set for 2 p.m. today at Riverside Mausoleum Chapel at Riverside Memorial Park. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Messer, a 47-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She was born in Missouri.

She worked for Newberry’s until the late 1960s.

Her husband, Forrest Messer, died in 1976.

She is survived by a daughter, Maxine Stanley of Ingram, Texas; and two brothers, Charles Dix of Spokane and Tony Dix of Post Falls.

Howard Sills Spokane

Memorial service for Howard M. Sills, 85, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sills, who died Sunday, was born in Palouse, Wash., and had lived in Spokane for more than 75 years.

He was past president of Teamsters Union Local No. 690 and was a member of the executive board for many years. He worked as a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; a daughter, Judith Campbell of Spokane; six stepsons, Pat McKay of Montana, Mike McKay of Wyoming, Jerry McKay of Nevada, and Tim, Steve and Tom McKay, all of California; three stepdaughters, Rose Marie and Sharon McKay, both of California, and Judy Drake of Washington; two grandchildren, 16 stepgrandchildren, a great-grandchild, 15 stepgreat-grandchildren and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Huey ‘Shorty’ Gaiser Priest River, Idaho

Memorial service for Huey “Shorty” Gaiser, 82, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River. Inurnment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River.

Mr. Gaiser died Monday at home.

He was born in Moscow, Idaho.

Mr. Gaiser had lived in the Priest River area since he was 16 and worked as a private logger before he went to work in the maintenance department of the county road district.

He retired from the county road district in 1976.

In 1936 he married Pearl Fox in Priest River.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Delores Heldi of Spokane and JoeAnn Seay of Priest River; three brothers, Louis Gaiser of St. John, Wash., John Gaiser of Amanda Park, Wash., and Fred Gaiser of Lompoc, Calif.; three sisters, Violet Slater of Clarkston, Wash., Freda Coy of Sweet Home, Ore., and Anna Wilson of Florida; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Carroll Smith Spokane

Memorial service for Carroll L. Smith, 72, is set for 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith, who died Sunday, was a lifetime Spokane resident and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

He attended the University of Idaho, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and graduated from Gonzaga University.

He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater and owned and operated Hoseley’s Hardware in Spokane through 1965. He later worked for Shering-Plough Pharmaceuticals and retired in 1989.

He married Kathleen Hough in 1970 in Spokane.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife; two sons, Kevin and Barrett Smith, both of Spokane; a daughter, Stacy Streeter of Billings, Mont.; a stepson, John Mitchell of Spokane; a sister, Suzanne King of Centralia, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.

Norma Bergstrom Spokane

Service for Norma E. Bergstrom, 72, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bergstrom, a 10-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Saskatchewan.

She was a former California resident and had worked as a bookkeeper for a food distributor.

Mrs. Bergstrom is survived by a daughter, Gail Shack of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.; her mother, Esther Nelson of Spokane; two brothers, Kenneth Nelson of Spokane and Clifford Nelson of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Opal Knapp Union Gap, Wash.

Service for Opal E. Knapp, a former Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pines Mausoleum Chapel in Spokane. Colonial Funeral Home in Toppenish, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Knapp, 84, died Saturday at Parkside Nursing Care Center in Union Gap.

She was born in Missoula and graduated from Missoula High School and Kinman Business School in Spokane.

In 1931 she married Aaron Knapp in Missoula, and they moved to Spokane in 1943.

Mrs. Knapp worked for the Naval Supply Depot from 1943-1946, was a dental assistant for Dr. B.H. Zimmerman in Dishman from 1947-1960 and then worked for the Spokane City Building Inspector as a department clerk from 1963-1966.

Her husband died in 1966, and she later moved to the Yakima area to be near her son.

She is survived by her son, Earl Knapp of and two great-grandchildren.
