Red-Light Campaign Continues

From Staff And Wire Reports

The campaign reminding Spokane area drivers they’re supposed to stop at red lights will continue through winter, officials said Wednesday.

Commuters can expect to see billboards urging them to stop at red lights well into 1997. Spokane Transit Authority buses also will carry that message on their sides.

“We hope people will read them and do what they say,” said Peggy Hodges, coordinator for traffic-safety programs in Spokane County.

In addition, a new videotape detailing the costs of accidents that resulted from someone running a red light will be available for use by civic groups and others promoting traffic safety, Hodges said.

“This is an important issue,” Sheriff John Goldman said. “It costs lives and causes injuries.”

Local officials launched the “Red Means Stop” campaign in April after receiving $15,000 from the federal government. , DataTimes
