Students Killed When Crowded Boat Capsizes

Compiled From Wire Services

An overcrowded boat ferrying schoolchildren on a field trip capsized in the southeastern province of Fujian, killing 22 students and a teacher, a newspaper report said Wednesday.

The vessel, which was designed to carry 12 people, was hit by a strong wind and capsized 40 feet from shore, the China Women’s Daily said.

The victims were among 110 fourth- and fifth-graders on the field trip Saturday, who crammed into three 16-foot boats to cross a reservoir, the paper said.

The accident is under investigation.
