American Tom Johnson retained his IBF featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Venezuela’s Ramon Guzman at Dublin, Ireland.

Also at Dublin, Nate Miller (U.S.) defended his WBA cruiserweight title stopping James Heath (U.S.) with 6 seconds remaining in the seventh round.

Britain’s Naseem Hamed knocked down Manuel Medina of Mexico three times, stopping him after 11 rounds to remain undefeated and retain his WBO featherweight title.

Azerbaijan upset Switzerland 1-0, Ireland defeated Liechtenstein 5-0 and Wales beat San Marino 6-0 as they began their bids to reach the 1998 soccer World Cup in London. Portugal and Armenia played to a 0-0 tie.

Felicia Ballanger of France won her second gold medal of the World Championships in the 500-meter cycling time trial at Manchester, England.
