WSU Wins Cougar Challenge

Washington State University captured its own Cougar Challenge Tournament Saturday by defeating Idaho State and Southern Illinois in 3-0 matches.
WSU, ranked eighth in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll, took the tournament title for the fifth time in seven years. Attendance at Bohler Gym was 997.
Idaho State finished second with a 3-1 record and Tulsa broke its two-season winless streak by posting two victories in four matches to take third place. Gonzaga (1-3) placed fourth and Southern Illinois (0-4) was fifth.
WSU All-American Sarah Silvernail tallied 77 kills in nine games (8.55 kills per game average) and was selected the tournament most valuable player. Cougar juniors Shannon Wyckoff and Stephanie Papke joined her on the all-tourney team. Tulsa’s Jennifer Sondrup, Gonzaga’s Nicole Lamoure and Idaho State’s Courtney Davis and Betsy Flenniken were also named to the all-tournament squad.
L-C State wins Whitworth tourney
Led by senior setter Kelli Harris, Lewis-Clark State posted two victories to win the 21st annual Whitworth Volleyball Invitational with a 5-0 record.
Whitworth finished 11th in the 12-team field, defeating only Westminster 15-9, 15-2, 15-2.
Joining Harris on the all-tournament team were Cheri Chapelle of Concordia, Vicky Crooks of Puget Sound, Wendy Jones of The Master’s, Tiffany Hopfauf of Carroll and Lissa Rosselli of Montana Tech.
Lewis-Clark State finished 5-0 and was followed by Puget Sound (4-1) and Carroll (4-1). Whitworth finished 1-4.
Lee named tournament MVP
Notre Dame junior Jaimie Lee, a Ferris High School graduate, was named most valuable player of the Shamrock Classic as the Fighting Irish won their own tournament.
Sixth-ranked Notre Dame (4-0) defeated Toledo 15-9, 15-7 15-9, then South Carolina 15-8, 15-4, 15-8.
Lee, filling in at setter and playing the position for the first time in her career, totaled 102 assists and had just one ball-handling error in Notre Dame’s three tournament victories. She also had 15 digs, six kills, four blocks and four aces.
