Netanyahu Meets With Clinton

Compiled From Wire Services

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told President Clinton on Monday he was eager to reopen peace talks with Syria, but ruled out a pullback on the Golan Heights as a precondition for negotiations.

Netanyahu left the Oval Office, after an hour-long conversation, with Clinton’s promise to try to get the talks going. “The United States fully understands our position,” Netanyahu told reporters after the White House meeting.

The prime minister openly appealed to Syria not to have a “fixed position” if it wanted to see the talks that broke down last May reopened.

Afterward, the senior American mediator, Dennis B. Ross, said Syria wanted to hold new peace talks with the Likud-led government and “our job is to find a way to make it possible.”
