Hamstring Sends Phillips To Sidelines
Idaho senior Ryan Phillips had never missed a football practice since coming to Moscow in 1992. He broke into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman in 1993 and has started the last 39 Vandals games.
But his streak of practice durability ended last week when Phillips rested his ailing hamstring. He expects his consecutive games streak will end Saturday when St. Mary’s visits the Kibbie Dome.
“I’ve never been hurt before,” Phillips said. “I can live with the pain. I just can’t run.”
Phillips, an All-American candidate at linebacker, aggravated his hamstring injury in the first half of Saturday’s San Diego State game. He didn’t play in the second half.
“I came around the corner on a rush and it felt like an electric shock throughout my leg,” he said. “It kills me not to be out there.”
With a bye week following St. Mary’s, Phillips hopes to return for the road game with Southwest Texas on Sept. 28.
Starting linebacker Jason Shelt, sporting hamstring and back injuries, is expected to play on Saturday. Starting defensive tackle Tim Wilson, who played sparingly against San Diego State because of an ankle injury, should play against St. Mary’s.
