Turning point

Mead opened the second half with a 62-yard drive to cut NC’s lead to 10-7, but on the ensuing possession, NC quarterback Mike Caballero was picked off by John Covell, giving the Panthers a short field of 26 yards to cover for the go-ahead touchdown.

In the first half it was most of the Indians, led by the running of Justin Lake. In the second half, Mead controlled both lines of scrimmage.

Notable

NC hasn’t defeated Mead officially since 1986, although a 22-8 win in 1993 was wiped out by a forfeit… . The Indians dominated the first half, holding the ball for 6 more minutes, piling up a 10-3 edge in first downs, 106-26 edge in rushing yards and 69-12 edge in passing yards while Mead was called for seven penalties.

Key play

The Pirates turned a CV turnover into a touchdown early in the third quarter to close to 17-14. They then forced the Bears to punt and Mike Dorton returned the kick 47 yards to the CV 28, only to have the play called back by a clip that put the Pirates on their 18. The CV defense held and Garrett Graham went up the middle for a 43-yard score two plays later.

Star of the game

Graham broke up a defensive struggle by busting a draw play 75 yards for a TD 1 minute into the second quarter and finished with 158 yards rushing. He also recovered a fumble that allowed the Bears to kick a field goal on the last play of the half for a 17-6 lead.

Notable

The Bears converted an interception into a touchdown a minute prior to halftime before Graham set up Peter Martin’s 38-yard field goal… . Dorton gained 134 yards, but the Pirates netted 133.
