Expansion Doubles Seating At Assembly Of God

Nina Culver Correspondent

New Life Assembly of God will celebrate the completion of a major renovation project next weekend.

The project has been a long time coming, says Linda Stavros, administrative assistant at the church, 11515 E. Broadway.

“It’s been a need that we’ve had for over 12 years,” she says. “We’ve been working on it for a long time.”

Fund raising for the $750,000 project began three years ago and still has a long way to go, Stavros says. For now, though, church members are happy to be back home after meeting at Horizon Junior High during the five months of construction.

Church members gutted the inside of the church and it was rebuilt by contractors. The building was expanded and a new basement added. The seating in the sanctuary doubled to 425 and the church is now completely wheelchair accessible with the addition of a handicap elevator. A newly paved parking lot completes the new look.

The grand opening weekend starts Friday with a new 7 p.m. service that will be held weekly. The goal, Stavros says, is to reach people who can’t attend the regular Sunday service.

A prime rib dinner will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the church. Tickets are $15 per person and must be purchased in advance. For tickets, call the church office at 926-0362. Free babysitting will be provided. Proceeds will be used to purchase classroom partitions. The weekend will wrap up with Christian education classes Sunday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a service at 10:30 a.m. All events will take place in the remodeled church.

Divorce recovery group meets

Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3606 S. Schafer Road, is starting a new divorce recovery support group, which will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. The classes will be held every Wednesday for 12 weeks.

Participants will have the opportunity to talk about divorce issues and presentations will be given that address issues such as the financial and emotional difficulties that come with a divorce and other concerns.

There is no cost for the class. Anyone interested in attending must register in advance by calling the church office at 926-6363.

Inspirational speaker visits Valley

Rev. Glen Cole, an inspirational speaker, will be at Valley Assembly of God church, 15618 E. Broadway, Sunday through Wednesday.

Cole will speak at the 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 6 p.m. services on Sunday, as well as at 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cole is a retired pastor who now travels the country giving inspirational speeches. His most recent posting was at Capitol Christian Center in Sacramento, Calif., where he retired in 1995 after 17 years. Prior to that, he spent 11 years at Evergreen Christian Center in Olympia. Cole also served as chaplain for the Washington State Legislature during most of that time.
