Mining Executives Defy U.S., Convene In Cuba
A Canadian mining company’s board of directors convened in Havana on Friday in defiance of a U.S. boycott, earning praise directly from Fidel Castro.
Castro met with leaders of Sherritt International and commended them as “capable people, firm in their commitments,” said Cuba’s state-run Prensa Latina news agency, monitored in Mexico City.
The Cuban leader also praised the mining company’s executives on state radio, saying they were brave and thanking them for the boost their company gives the Cuban economy.
Sherritt International is one of Cuba’s largest foreign investors.
Washington recently barred executives of the mining company from the United States, enforcing a provision of the new Helms-Burton act. The law attempts to punish foreign companies doing business in Cuba on property that Castro’s government confiscated from U.S. companies 37 years ago.
