Mort Rambles For 235 As Post Falls Breezes

Senior running back Josh Mort carried the ball 13 times for 194 yards and three touchdowns, one from 74 yards out, in the first half to lead Post Falls to a 40-8 win over visiting Bonners Ferry.

Mort finished with 235 yards on 15 carries.

“Our offensive line did a great job,” Post Falls coach Jerry Lee said. “They’re really coming around.” Defensively, the Trojans limited Bonners Ferry to 235 yards in total offense, compared the 382 they gained on offense. The Badgers gained much of their yardage against the Trojans’ second unit, which played the entire fourth quarter.

The Post Falls defense also forced two fumbles, both recovered by senior defensive back Cameron Christiansen.

Bonners Ferry lost senior quarterback Todd Van Gundy to injury in the third quarter, when he was hit hard just as he finished releasing a pass.

Van Gundy complained of neck, jaw and middle-ear pain. As a precaution, he was taken to Kootenai Medical Center.

A bright spot for Bonners Ferry was the play of senior Adam Hiatt. Moving to quarterback from wide receiver to replace Van Gundy, Hiatt led the Badgers to their only score, a 17-yard pass to senior Tyler Hurst with 52 seconds remaining.

Sandpoint 33, Lakeland 14

Jeremy Thielbahr rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns to lead the A-1 Bulldogs (2-0) to a victory over the visiting A-2 Hawks (0-2).

Thielbahr was unstoppable on his way to touchdown runs of 64 and 12 yards. The first score answered a 75-yard TD by Lakeland’s Mike Larsen that tied the game at 7.

“Thielbahr is a good running back, but we made him look great tonight,” said Lakeland coach Terry Kiefer.

The Hawks couldn’t get anything going on offense as Sandpoint’s Ryan Knowles and Justin Boeck were in the backfield on every passing play.
