Exception To Two-Sport Rule A Boon For B’S

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

Valley Christian School cross country runners received good news this year when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association listened favorably to Don Dicus’s plea.

Last year the WIAA passed a ruling that prohibited athletes from participating in two sports during the same season.

As a result, Jason Schlafmann who was third in district cross country in 1994, Dan Drozdov, who was 16th, and Tim Dahl, who was 37th, as juniors were forced to choose and played soccer only.

Dicus, Valley Christian cross country coach, argued that it created a hardship for schools of B classification size.

WIAA agreed and amended its ruling. Rule 18.16.1 passed during the 1996 representative assembly now says “A student shall not compete concurrently in more than one interscholastic sport per season.” As amended it continues, “The exception shall be students participating in high schools of ‘B’ classification with local administrators and school board determining elgible participation.”

The result is that Schlafmann, Drozdov, Dahl, Robert Haynes and J.J. Gass are all running cross country this year and also on the soccer team.

“I’m looking forward to this,” said Dicus. “At Freeman we beat a couple of A schools and narrowly lost to Wilbur-Creston.”

Joining the senior veterans are returnees Max Stormo, a senior, and Chad Meyer, a junior.

New to the team are senior Corey White and promising freshmen Andrew Diaz, Eric Dahl and Jared Evans. Only Valley Christian girls runner is Anna Fauerso.

Wednesday, the team will be at full strength for the first time in a Panorama League meet at Bear Lake.

Principal ‘dyeing’ to pay off

For the second straight year, North Pines Junior High principal Dave Bouge has lost the bet with his wife Glenna, principal at Bowdish.

The deal is, when the two ninth grade football teams play, the losing team’s principal and team captain must appear before the winner’s student body, hair dyed in the victor’s school colors.

Bowdish won Thursday 39-0. Bouge and captain Shawn Grady will appear at Bowdish Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the appropriate colors.

“Shawn might be sick the rest of the year,” said Bouge. “He swears he doesn’t remember the bet.”

Actually, the pair had a temporary reprieve. They were supposed to be at Bowdish Friday, but the salon where they shopped was out of non-permanent red.

“They had the permanent color but even my darling bride agreed that was inappropriate,” said Bouge.

What upset him was that there was plenty of temporary blue in stock. But for the second straight year Glenna avoided the indignity.

EV takes up where it left off

East Valley’s volleyball team, with wins over Pullman and West Valley, is off to a perfect start.

Last year’s Frontier League runnerup and state qualifier on Tuesday will be in Clarkston for a match against the defending league champions that will determine undisputed first place.

West Valley dropped to 0-2 Thursday with the three-set loss.

Two weeks into the Greater Spokane League season, Central Valley has beaten Shadle Park, the only victory in eight combined starts by the Bears and University.

On Tuesday the Titans host league co-leader Rogers while CV is at third-place Mead.

Eagle soccer team tips rivals

West Valley’s soccer team made a breakthrough with its 1-0 soccer victory over rival East Valley.

Last year the Eagles and Knights tied twice before EV won a playoff victory to reach the district finals.

This time a healthy Cheryl Nelson scored 16 minutes into the second half for a victory.

A Frontier League win this year counts three points instead of two.

Next up for WV is a match against defending league and district champion Deer Park/Riverside on Tuesday at Riverside.

Greater Spokane League teams continue non-league competition until Sept. 30 when University meets league favorite Mead.

To date, the Panthers are unbeaten with non-counting wins over the Titans, 4-1, and Central Valley, 2-1.

U-Hi (2-1) beat another common foe, WV, 4-0 while the Bears (1-1-1) and Eagles tied 2-2 in earlier matches.
