Man Found Dead After Standoff
A newspaper carrier was found dead in his house Friday night after a standoff in which he and a Grays Harbor County sheriff’s deputy exchanged gunfire, authorities said.
Duane D. Perry, 53, was found dead, with a gunshot wound, by members of the county’s special emergency response team who entered the home on U.S. 101 in this hamlet a few miles south of Lake Quinault about 9 p.m., Sheriff Dennis Morrisette said. A handgun was found with Perry.
Morrisette gave the following account:
At 3:14 p.m. Deputy Jeff Myers tried to stop a car for failing to yield the right of way on the highway near the south end of the lake.
The driver, apparently on his delivery route, headed south with Myers in pursuit, then stopped at his house and ducked through a sliding glass door as the deputy fired a canister of pepper gas.
The man then fired a weapon through the door and the deputy returned fire. There were three or four exchanges of gunfire.
