Beckman’s Goal Lifts Vikings Over Bulldogs
Teah Beckman’s goal from 30 yards out Saturday led visiting Coeur d’Alene over Sandpoint 2-1 and lifted the Vikings into first place in North Idaho League girls soccer.
CdA (7-2-0, 5-0-0) trailed until the 45-minute mark, when Kara Kovatch fed Janee Andre for a goal. Elisa Scherb’s goal at 15 minutes gave the Bulldogs (4-1-2, 4-1-0) their lead.
CdA’s Stacey Chambers controlled the defensive line and shut down Sandpoint’s one-touch tactics.
Also in the league, Sarah Meyer scored twice and Holly Davidson added one goal and two assists to lead visiting Moscow (3-2-1) over Bonners Ferry 6-1.
Lauren Rich scored for the Badgers (0-6-0).
Cross country
Kenny Benjamin finished third to lead the Moscow boys to second place at Clarkston’s Seaport Run.
Benjamin finished the 3 miles in 16 minutes, 26 seconds, 13 seconds behind winner Paul Abernathy of the host Bantams. East Valley won the team race, with 37 points.
Volleyball
Visiting Sandpoint (5-4, 2-0) outslugged Lewiston 17-15, 15-9, 15-7 in an Inland Empire League match.
Laura Bloom had 15 blocks and 12 kills, and Kari Alldredge added six kills for the Bengals (3-2, 1-2).
Jamie Hammes’ 11 kills led St. Maries to a 15-2, 15-1 win at Bonners Ferry that tied the Lumberjacks (9-3, 3-0) for first place in the Intermountain League.
Bridgette O’Dwyer added six kills and five blocks for SM, which is knotted with idle Kellogg. The Badgers are 1-7, 1-3.
Lakeside (2-7) lost its four matches at the Garfield-Palouse Tournament.
Harmony Hammons had nine kills and seven blocks on the day for the Knights. Michelle Kelley served for nine points against Liberty.
Tekoa-Oakesdale beat visiting Clark Fork 15-6, 15-2, 9-15, 15-9 in a non-league match. Christy Howard had seven kills and Katie Hess three aces for the Wampus Cats (5-2).
Swimming
Sandpoint’s boys and Lake City’s girls won the Sandpoint Invitational.
Sandpoint’s Ben Palmer won the 100-meter breaststroke and the 100 freestyle. Brad Kleinjans of secondplace CdA won the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
LC’s Megan Taggart won the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Alex Blank won the 100 breaststroke and Sarah Gray the 100 freestyle for second-place CdA. Moscow’s Emily Melina won the 100 butterfly and 200 IM.
PGA Cup Matches
The professionals were able to hold their morning lead from Friday to win the Inland Empire PGA Professional vs. Amateur Cup Matches at the par 70 Manito Golf and Country Club.
The pros finished with 13 points, while the amateurs scored 6-1/2 points in the final standings.
Professional Craig Schuh defeated Jim O’Rourke 2-1 in individual play and picked up MVP honors.
Kent Brown beat Dave Christenson 2-1 to clinch the MVP title for amateurs. Steve Prugh defeated Ed Stocklen 2-1, and Les Blakley lost to Al Scarth 6-4.
Matt Bunn, Mike Rorholm and Dan Porter picked up their individual wins against Monte Best (5-3), Steve Becker (1-up) and Chuck Green (2-1), respectively.
Clint Wallman and Kevin Hillyer finished even and Tom Colon defeated Jim Campasino, 2-1. Bob Scott beat Tim Waggoner 2-1.
