Smith Reigns
Former University of Washington basketball star Rhonda Smith is right at home with her new American Basketball League team, the Seattle Reign.
“I would have gone anywhere, but the adjustment has been a lot easier for me than the other players. My family is here and I know my way around,” said Smith, 23.
The Husky women’s all-time leading scorer with 1,801 points, Smith also set a singleseason scoring record in her final UW season, 1994-95, with 583 points.
The 6-2 Seattle native, a 1991 graduate of Franklin High School, signed a twoyear contract with the Reign as did former Husky teammate Tara Davis.
“Smith was a great pick for Seattle. Having a local standout will be a great draw and an immediate identity for the fans,” said Kathy Anderson, the longtime assistant Husky coach now serving as assistant to the UW athletic director for basketball relations.
Smith joined the sports world at 13 when her dad took her to basketball practice at the Rainier Community Center. Since then she’s done a lot of hard work to develop her natural ability.
