Typhoon Violet Slams Into Japan

Associated Press

Typhoon Violet howled through the streets of the capital today, barreling over trash cans and pelting the city with rain.

The typhoon buffeted Tokyo and the neighboring, heavily-populated regions of Kanagawa and Chiba, dumping 2 inches of rain in an hour, the Central Meteorological Bureau said. Winds of up to 78 mph whipped rain into horizontal sheets.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from Typhoon Violet, the 17th typhoon to hit Japan this year.

Domestic flights were canceled and some bullet trains were ordered to run at reduced speeds.
