Mead Runs Away In Eugene
It was supposed to be an early-season challenge for the Mead boys cross country team in Eugene, Ore. They should have just mailed the trophy to the Panthers.
Led by Jason Fayant, Mead swept the first six spots, and had its seven runners in the first nine in the Churchill Challenge on Monday at Laurelwood Golf Course.
“I thought we’d run well, but when you go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and you actually have seven runners in the top ten, that’s amazing,” said Mead coach Pat Tyson. “The people there watching were in shock.”
On a 5,000-meter course, which Tyson described as “very hilly and very tough,” Fayant timed 16 minutes, 39 seconds to best teammate Ryan Wiser by 2.5 seconds.
Morgan Thompson was third, Damon Ristau fourth and Chad Wiser fifth as Mead compiled the minimum low of 15 points. Canby, Ore., was second with 89 and Yreka, Calif., third with 117.
