After NC punter Brandon Allen pinned Rogers back on its 8, Brandon Harmer separated Pirates quarterback Jeff Mace from the ball with a vicious hit in the backfield and when the ball popped loose, David Sandberg recovered in the endzone to help build NC’s lead to 16-7.

Star of the game

Allen also killed a punt at the Rogers 7 in the second quarter that gave the Indians the field position they needed to get a 29-yard field goal by Cody Smith - his third of the half - that gave NC a 9-7 lead.

Notable

Rogers (1-2, 1-2) turned the ball over on its first position, giving NC (1-1, 1-2) the ball on the 33. The offense went nowhere, but Smith blasted a 46-yard field goal… . The only drive NC really had was on its second possession, going from its 33 to the Rogers 8 before Smith kicked a 24-yard field goal… . Rogers started a nice eight-play, 75-yard drive in the first quarter that ended when Mike Dorton stretched over the goal line after an 11-yard run. The PAT put the Pirates up 7-6 just 41 seconds into the second quarter… . The Indians picked off four passes… . Dorton finished with 124 yards but no other Pirate had positive yardage… . The Pirates’ passing game was only good for 11 completions in 29 attempts… . NC’s only win last year was over Rogers.

Key play

With the game still in doubt, CV put its best drive together after Nate McFarlane returned a punt 36 yards to the Mead 42 on the first play of the fourth quarter. However, four plays later, when Tyree Clowe returned from an injury to inspire the offense, he ripped off 13 yards only to fumble the ball on the Mead 17 and Evan Thomas recovered for the Panthers.

Star of the game

Thomas, the Mead free safety, picked off two passes, recovered a fumble on the Panthers’ 17 early in the fourth quarter when the lead was 10-0 and then turned a screen pass into a 61-yard touchdown to ice the game.

Notable Central Valley (1-2, 1-2) was shut out for the first time since a 6-0 loss to University the sixth game of the 1993 season… . The Panthers (3-0, 3-0) kicked off to start both halves… . Mead only had 56 yards rushing in the first half, but it was 25 more than the Bears. The Panthers also had an 81-23 edge in passing yard, holding CV to only two second-quarter first down… . CV had three possessions in the first quarter, netting 12 yards. The Bears punted all three times… . CV lost standout sophomore running back Tyree Clowe when he reaggravated an old shoulder injury in the first half. A week after gaining more than 100 yards, he had only four carries for 10 yards before exiting. After standing on the sidelines with his pads off, he returned in the fourth quarter and broke a 13-yard run to the Mead 17 only to fumble the ball away. He finished with 24 yards on seven carries… . Scott McGlocklin picked up 105 yards on 23 carries for Mead, the Panthers had 122 yards on 33 carries… . CV also had 133 rushing plays but gained 161 yards… . Mead had no turnovers and just three penalties for 25 yards… . CV averaging 12 penalties a game, had four for 34 yards.

C. Park 32, G-Prep 21

Clover Park of Tacoma jumped out to an 18-0 lead and held on to defeat Gonzaga Prep in a non-league game in Tacoma. Jordan Rasmussen scored three touchdowns and Dion Coleman added two more, including one on an 82-yard run, to lead the Clover Park (2-1) attack.

The Bullpups (2-1) scored twice in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown passes by back-up quarterback Mark Eggar. Eggar hit Kelvin Bacon on a 22-yard scoring strike and then hooked up with Tyson Thielman from 11 yards out. Eggar finished with 90 yards on 4-of-4 passing.

Gonzaga Prep’s final touchdown came on a 5-yard run by starting quarterback Kevin O’Connell. The Bullpups return home to play Ferris at 8:30 Friday night at Albi.
