A look back at the past week on Wall Street
What’s hot
When Conseco agreed to acquire Transport Holdings earlier this week, the stock price of the provider of cancer insurance jumped almost 40 percent. Conseco, a financial services concern, offered $70 a share for Transport Holdings. That’s about what the stock was going for Friday ($69.50) after a jump of $17.75 since Wednesday … IPOs have been getting a black eye recently, with many either starting slowly or falling after a quick start.
Abercrombie & Fitch isn’t in the former category, that’s for sure. The Columbus, Ohio-based unit of Limited Inc. was initially offered at $16 Thursday. By Friday’s close it was trading at $23, after falling 12-1/2 cents the last day of the week … This week’s hot computer stock is Adobe Systems, a San Jose-based software maker. Though the company’s earnings fell in the third quarter, the drop was expected. The stock rose $3.62-1/2 Thursday, though it fell back 75 cents Friday, closing the week at $37.87-1/2.
What’s not
Another company that wasn’t so lucky was Burlington Industries, which announced lower fourth-quarter earnings. Couple that with the news Burlington had excess inventory and it is no wonder the company’s stock fell more than $2 the past two days, closing Friday at $10.75.
