Memorial Service Set For Sp Counselor

A memorial service will be held tomorrow for Douglas McCray, a Shadle Park High School counselor who died Monday.

The service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., at First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd.

McCray, 47, was the counselor for the junior class at Shadle. Students painted a farewell to their mentor on the wall above the Monroe Street Bridge on Tuesday evening.

“There were so many people he helped, he was always there for you,” said student Ryan Kennedy.

“We need him right now to talk to about this,” said another student.

McCray was a Shadle Park graduate and had a natural rapport with his students.

He was also a track coach, Young Life leader and father figure to students. He’d known many of them since the eighth grade.

“He always knew if you skipped classes,” recalled a student.

He was known for stopping students in the hall and reminding them to sign up for the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

“We’ll sign up for our SAT’s,” promises a red spray painted note on the Monroe Street wall.

“And make sure you mention his laugh, he had the best laugh,” added another student.
