Police Substation To Open Saturday On S. Monroe
The Cannon Hill area has a new neighbor.
On Saturday, the COPS Southwest station will officially open for business.
COPS Southwest will celebrate its grand opening Saturday with an open house from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Shirley Wilson, the station’s coordinator, invites neighbors to drop in for door prizes and refreshments.
The new station is located at 820-B S. Monroe, one block north of Jones Pharmacy and Huckleberry’s Fresh Food Market.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be performed by Police Chief Terry Mangan at 1 p.m.
“A lot of people are happy we’re here,” said Wilson. “And some are not.”
The station joins two other South Hill stations:- COPS Southeast at 2824 E. 29th and COPS East Central at 3001 E. Fifth.
The new station will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, Wilson said.
The station will provide accident report forms, voter registration forms and a place for people to express their safety concerns.
The station will be staffed by volunteers trained to photograph graffiti “tags” and pick up fingerprints in the event of a car break-in.
“We can really help the police,” Wilson said.
Because of the new station, Wilson said police presence in the neighborhood will increase.
“Police officers will be in and out of the station at night to do paper work,” she said.
Volunteers are still needed to staff the station. Anyone interested in applying is asked to call COPS Southwest at 625-3328.
