Gm Workers Strike At Oklahoma Plant
About 3,500 employees at a General Motors plant walked off the job Friday night, jeopardizing production of the Cutlass and the Malibu.
The members of United Auto Workers Local 1999 picked up their picket signs at 11:59 p.m. They had wanted GM to agree to increase manpower and purchase more tools to reduce injuries. The union also was trying to negotiate an agreement involving vacation time and plant operating rules.
Although GM and the UAW signed a national contract in December, hourly workers in Oklahoma City have gone without a local contract since September.
Negotiators had worked through the night trying to prevent the work stoppage.
