Junior Bloomsday Expected To Be Cold

Advice for Junior Bloomies: Dress warmly.

It’s going to be a cold Junior Bloomsday.

While temperatures are expected to reach a high of 51 degrees by late afternoon, morning temperatures Saturday should be in the low 40s, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 8,000 kids ages 5 through 12 are expected at Joe Albi Stadium for the 12th annual Junior Bloomsday.

Twelve-year-olds go first at 9 a.m. followed by younger kids. The 5-year-olds are expected to get their turn around 1 p.m.

Advice for parents: Arrive 45 minutes early, said Dan Petek, the event’s volunteer coordinator.

“Parents tend to get frustrated at the last minute,” he said. “Expect traffic and just persevere.”

Even if kids do arrive late, runners are sent in groups of about 40 every five minutes. So if children miss the beginning, they could always run with the last group in their age division.

Saturday is also the last day to sign up for Bloomsday without paying the late entry fee. Starting Sunday, the fee jumps from $8 to $25.
