Texas Tech did not notify the NCAA after learning several athletes made unauthorized long-distance telephone calls last year, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Failing to investigate and report potential rules infractions to the NCAA can be deemed a major violation. The NCAA already is investigating possible violations in the university’s football and men’s basketball teams.

Mexico, led by three goals from Carlos Hermosillo, routed Jamaica 6-0 to take a commanding lead in its regional qualifying group for soccer’s 1998 World Cup.

Mexico (2-0-1) leads its qualifying group with seven points, followed by Costa Rica (1-0-1) and the United States (1-1-1) with four points apiece.
