Trouble With Magic Makes A Good Read

Sudha Nandagopal, Northwood Juni

Enter the world of “Touched By Magic” by Doranna Durgin and enjoy an interesting story.

It begins with Reandn, a guard in the service of the King. He has a respected job, a wonderful wife and a son who admires him. His pleasant life comes to a quick end, however, when boys from the King’s town begin to disappear. Reandn’s son follows and, soon after, the peaceful life that Reandn knew is shattered by the discovery of the evil person responsible. There’s another thing responsible: Magic.

Magic has begun to return to Reandn’s country and, as he sets off on the trail of the one responsible for his shattered life, he finds there are many people who believe his story. There also many who disbelieve.

Then he meets the young girl, Rethia. Through her, he hears of the unicorns and realizes that he must do everything he can to stop them from bringing their magic back into his world. Once shattered by magic, he will not allow his life to be destroyed again.

Durgin has done a good job with this story. Her characters are easy to understand and enjoy. All the characters are well developed throughout the story, giving them just enough personality without overdoing them. The only problem is the ending: It’s slightly abrupt.

If Durgin had emphasized the climax of the story, it would have been more enjoyable. However, if you are looking for a fairly quick read and a decent, although predictable story, then this is the book for you.
