Dollar Weakens Vs. Yen

The dollar ended mostly higher but fell against the yen Wednesday after Japan’s top currency policy-maker said the yen is too weak and the senior U.S. trade negotiator warned Japan to curb its growing surplus.

The remarks by Eisuke Sakakibara, director of the Finance Ministry’s international finance bureau, and by U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky reinforced fears in the foreign-exchange market that the United States and Japan will act jointly to strengthen the yen.

The dollar’s strength in other dealings came on news of a surge in March U.S. industrial output and a monthly report by the Bundesbank that said the dollar’s levels reflected a healthy U.S. economy.
