Mock Accident At CV Drives Home Tragedy Of Drinking And Driving
As Sabrina Page lay across the car hood, all she could think about at first was how cold she was.
Then, as she listened to her two best friends crying over her, she began think about life, drinking and driving, and her friends.
Central Valley High School students came back from spring break to a Monday morning assembly designed to raise students’ awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Page, a senior, played the victim in a drunken driving accident that was staged on Central Valley’s football field. She and other students who participated are all members of Students Against Drunk Driving at Central Valley High.
The wind blew. Dialogue between paramedics, deputies and dispatchers played over the P.A. system, and a hum rose from the generator for the jaws of life.
“Second patient, respiratory trauma, code red, copy,” the dispatcher acknowledged.
“One in custody for vehicular homicide,” said a deputy.
The assembly concluded with a “memorial service” for Page. A slide show started with baby pictures. The service, complete with eulogy, left Hillary Thomas, a senior, in tears.
Teacher Kaye Wood, adviser for SADD, said active participants of the group were given the roles.
Page wasn’t able to watch most of the memorial service. She was busy washing off the mock blood - a combination that included peppermint flavoring, so it wouldn’t taste yucky if it got in her mouth.
But what she did hear affected her.
“It makes you think about how you treat people. It was weird,” Page said.
