Religion, Liszt Music Will Be Topic

Pianist and scholar Paul Barnes will present “Liszt and the Cross: Music as Sacrament in the B Minor Sonata” today on Eastern Washington University’s Cheney campus.

Barnes will give a lecture on the relationship between religion and art in the life and music of Franz Liszt and then perform Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor.

Barnes is the co-chair of the piano department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music and is currently traveling the country. The program, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 1996-97 Eastern Dialogues Speaker Series at EWU.

Barnes’ program will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the Showalter Auditorium. Tonight’s performance is the first musical performance in the newly refurbished auditorium, which has been restored to vintage 1915 design.

Dramatized sermons on Sunday

The Covenant Players will perform at Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday. The group dramatizes sermons that are tailored for individual churches.

The Players, organized in 1963, are based in Oxnard, Calif., and are directed by founder and playwright Charles Tanner. The group has performed over a million times in 84 countries since its inception.

A performance will also be presented during Sunday school. Classes for all ages begin at 9:45 a.m.

Gardener to speak at luncheon

Local gardening expert Phyllis Stephens will speak at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church’s annual spring luncheon on Saturday. A question-and-answer period will follow.

The luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m., will be catered by A Catered Affair and will cost $8 per person. Reservations are required and must by made by 5 p.m. today.

Trading Post sale Saturday

Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th, will host its Trading Post sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fund-raiser will include garage-sale items and a silent auction. There is no admission charge.

Annual bazaar next Saturday

Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield, is hosting its 49th annual Sukiyaki Dinner and Bazaar on April 26. The bazaar will feature home-baked goods as well as hand-crafted gift items.

Bazaar and dinner hours are from noon to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the church at 535-2687. Proceeds will benefit various church programs.

Whodunit planned at Emmanuel

Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney will host an evening of murder, mystery and fun beginning at 7 p.m on Saturday. Church members will act out a murder mystery, and those attending will be asked to solve it.

Those attending are asked to bring a dessert to share and a can of food for the Cheney Food Bank. No advance registration is required.
