WSU’s Fast Start Dooms Whits

Jason Hairston drove in four runs with a pair of home runs and Steve Kelley hit a solo shot as Washington State defeated Whitworth 8-5 in a non-league baseball game Tuesday in Pullman.

The Cougars scored six runs in the first inning off Pirate starter Clark Rider. The key hit was Hairston’s three-run home run.

Dave Wheeler tossed the first six innings for WSU (7-33) and Les McTavish finished up with the final three innings. Whitworth (12-16) had a four-game win streak snapped with the loss, although the Pirates outhit WSU 15-13.

Bucky Jacobsen’s 20th and 21st home runs of the season helped Lewis-Clark State College to a 7-5 non-league baseball victory over Washington at Graves Field in Seattle.

Jacobsen hit a third home run, that coming in the ninth, but it did not count when the game was called because of rain.

Adam Flohr (4-3) threw a three-hit shutout in the opening game of the NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane and Eddie Driskill went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Sasquatch.

In the second game, Brett Doeber (2-1) won his second consecutive decision and Chad Johnson picked up his fourth save. Chad Kline drove in two runs for the Sasquatch and Driskill had the game-winning RBI in the seventh.

Katie Carpenter and Holly Vanwert pitched a pair of five-ining no-hitters to lead Community Colleges of Spokane’s sweep.

Carpenter improved her record to 5-1 and Vanwert moved hers to 8-4.

Traci Moore homered in the second game for CCS.

Golf

Vandals third The University of Idaho women’s golf team shot a 326 third round to place third at the Big West Championship at the UI Golf Course. New Mexico State, ranked 20th, won the championship.

At Tacoma, Washington State is in 10th place after two rounds of the Pac-10 women’s golf championship at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

Anne Marvin leads Washington State with a two-round total of 157.

Arizona State is first at 576, followed by Arizona (582) and Stanford (586).
