Giants Nudge Braves
National League
Barry Bonds’ slicing popup turned into a three-run inside-the-park homer and Bill Mueller singled in the winning run in the ninth inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Wednesday at San Francisco.
Ryan Klesko hit a two-run homer as the Braves scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game, but the Giants won for the 10th time in 11 games by scoring off Alan Embree (1-1) in the ninth.
Bonds got his second homer of the year when he blooped a ball down the left-field line in the first inning and it bounced just out of the reach of a diving Klesko, who tumbled into the wall.
As a dazed Klesko slowly retrieved the ball from the left-field corner, Bonds sped around the bases and scored standing up.
Pirates 3, Phillies 2 Pittsburgh
Mark Johnson hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, leading Pittsburgh over Philadelphia.
Rockies 7, Marlins 3 Denver
Andres Galarraga joined Tony Armas atop the list of the most prolific home run hitters from Venezuela.
Galarraga tied Armas with 251 career homers when he led off the seventh inning with a solo shot in Colorado’s win over Florida.
Mets 10, Reds 2 New York
Todd Hundley hit a pair of two-run homers and drove in five runs, leading New York over Cincinnati, stretching Cincinnati’s losing streak to four.
Expos 4, Cubs 3 Montreal
Henry Rodriguez went 3 for 4 and drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning double as Montreal rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Chicago.
Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 Los Angeles
Raul Mondesi’s bases-loaded single broke an eighth-inning tie and Los Angeles beat St. Louis to snap a three-game losing streak.
Astros 11, Padres 7 San Diego
Jeff Bagwell hit a three-run homer and Brad Ausmus drove in three runs on a pair of doubles as Houston overcame four errors.
Clearing the bases
The Rockies gave Milwaukee much-needed infield help, trading Jeff Huson to the Brewers for a player to be named. Huson, who broke into the majors with Montreal in 1988, nearly quit after being cut by the Rockies in spring training. He agreed to an assignment at Triple-A Colorado Springs after the Rockies promised they would attempt to trade him. … Barry Bonds surpassed 1,000 RBIs for his career. … Chicago’s Ryne Sandberg is one home run away from tying Joe Morgan for the career lead among second basemen with 266. Sandberg has hit 270, but five of those came when he played third base in 1982.
