California’s Bay Area will pursue a bid for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The bid could eventually could cost up to $40 million. Seattle and New York City are well ahead of the Bay Area committee in organizing, and several other cities are considering a bid.

The U.S. will continue to field a team of NBA stars for the 1998 World Championships and 2000 Sydney Olympics. While some critics have called for a return to a team made up solely of U.S. college players, NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik said the national team will continue to be dominated by pros.

The city of Nashville has received NCAA approval to host a postseason college football bowl game beginning in 1998. The Music City Bowl will feature a Southeastern Conference team vs. an at-large invitee and will be played sometime between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The foal of Kentucky Derby winners Winning Colors and Unbridled died during a difficult birth at Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Ky. Winning Colors, who in 1988 became the third filly to win the Derby, is doing fine and probably will be bred to one of Gainesway’s stallions in about a month.
