Governor Wants Mexico Post
Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld said Saturday he has been offered the job as U.S. ambassador to Mexico and will accept.
The post would preclude him from participating in politics for at least the next few years, including the 2000 presidential race, the Republican governor said.
“I don’t think you can be an ambassador for the State Department and be involved in politics,” Weld said.
Weld, 51, said if this job possibility had not appeared, he probably would have run for a third term as governor in the 1998 election.
President Clinton is expected to formally nominate Weld this week. The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
Weld said he expects to stay in the governor’s job until he is confirmed. He expects to hand over the reins of state government to Lt. Gov. Paul Cellucci in two to three months, about the time it takes for the Senate to confirm an ambassadorial appointment.
