Whitworth Scores Late, Gains Split

Chad Ripke, in the seventh, and Miguel Saldin, in the eighth, had two-out, RBI singles Saturday as the Whitworth Pirates (13-17, 11-3) won the nightcap of a doubleheader to earn a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges baseball split with visiting Willamette (21-10, 12-5).

The split kept first-place Whitworth in front of Willamette in the standings.

Sam Fleming worked out of trouble in the sixth and ninth to win for Whitworth.

Tim Bishop’s three-run homer in the first gave the Pirates a 4-1 lead, but Willamette tied the game, thanks to Mitch Gregg’s two-run blast.

Jason Hairston’s two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth of the second game gave the Cougars (11-33, 6-9) a sweep of their Pacific-10 Conference North doubleheader with the visiting Vikings (9-33, 2-11).

The Cougars have won six consecutive games. Portland State has dropped five straight, all to WSU.

Dave Wheeler went the distance in the opener to become the Cougars’ first three-game winner. Mike Schneider (2-0) picked up the win in the nightcap.

Tyson Vermillion crashed into the left-field fence to preserve the opener and the Beavers (28-10-1, 10-4) swept the visiting Huskies (30-17, 11-4) at Corvallis, Ore., to close within one-half game of first-place UW in the Pac-10 North.

OSU freshman B.R. Cook allowed six runs on eight hits in 7-1/3 innings in the nightcap.

USF 4-8, Gonzaga 0-3

Sean Buller and Ray Rivera pitched complete-game wins to guide the visiting Dons (22-25, 10-9) to a West Coast Conference sweep of the Bulldogs (16-26-1, 4-15).

Buller pitched a five-hitter and struck out three to outduel Kevin Workman, who made his collegiate debut after usually playing shortstop. Workman allowed Jermaine Clark’s two-run homer in the first and a pair of Dons sacrifice flies.

Rivera scattered nine hits and struck out four. Matt Purkiss’ two-run double highlighted a three-run third that gave the Dons a 4-0 lead.

Adam Flohr threw a complete game and Chad Kline reached 40 RBIs with his 13th and 14th doubles as the visiting Sasquatch won the opening game of a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader with the Indians.

Michael Penny of CCS added three hits and two RBIs in the opener.

Women’s crew

At Vancouver Lake, Wash., Washington State’s Varsity Eight and Junior Varsity Eight defeated Gonzaga and host Oregon State.

WSU’s Varsity Eight finished in 7 minutes, 7.6 seconds - faster than OSU by 4 seconds. The JV Eight’s winning time was 7:06.4 to OSU’s 7:09.

GU’s 7:42.4 in the Varsity Four topped WSU by 10 seconds.
