Volcanos Rumbling Again In Montserrat
A month after eruptions killed at least 10 people, Montserrat’s volcano roared to life Thursday and touched off small avalanches of superheated rock and gas.
Explosions of ash blew across the island, but authorities said there was no immediate danger of bigger blasts.
The eruptions occurred “with no warning at all,” Bob Webb, head of the British governor’s office, told The Associated Press. “It could just quiet down and go back to sleep for a few days or we could start to see another dome collapse.”
A reporter saw a couple of the lethal avalanches called pyroclastic flows - clouds of superheated rock, ash and gas that, in a sizable eruption, can race down the volcano’s flanks at 100 mph.
