Schmidt Haunts Ex-Teammates

Jason Kendall and Jose Guillen homered in a four-run fourth inning and Jason Schmidt, traded by Atlanta a year ago this month, beat his old team for the first time as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the visiting Braves 5-4 Tuesday night.

Kendall and Guillen’s homers helped the Pirates to a 5-2 lead against Tom Glavine (10-6), who had missed his last scheduled start with tendinitis in his right Achilles.

Schmidt (7-6) made the three-run lead hold up until Javy Lopez’s two-run homer in the seventh.

Mets 5, Cardinals 4 (10) New York

Edgardo Alfonzo hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give New York its seventh consecutive home win and its 34th comeback victory of the year, tops in the majors.

Matt Franco’s two-out pinch-hit single tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Pete Harnisch, who was activated from the disabled list following treatment for depression, made his first start for the Mets since opening day.

He left after six innings, leading 3-2.

Giants 8, Cubs 2 Chicago

Bill Mueller hit a two-out, bases-loaded triple to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning as San Francisco beat Chicago for its third consecutive victory.

Dodgers 5, Expos 4 (10) Montreal

Mike Piazza homered leading off the 10th inning - his second home run of the game and 24th of the season - as Los Angeles defeated Montreal for its eighth victory in 10 games.

Reds 7, Padres 3 Cincinnati

Eduardo Perez and Reggie Sanders homered off struggling Sterling Hitchcock as Cincinnati handed San Diego its sixth loss in seven games.

Marlins 6, Astros 5 Miami

Moises Alou’s bases-loaded two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth lifted Florida over Houston.

Rockies 4, Phillies 2 Philadelphia

Eric Young’s two-out RBI double in the eighth inning capped a three-run rally as Colorado defeated Philadelphia to end a three-game losing streak.

Clearing the bases

Former Los Angeles manager Tommy Lasorda will have his No. 2 retired Aug. 15 at Dodger Stadium… . Cincinnati’s Deion Sanders stole his 52nd base, the most by a Red since Eric Davis had 80 in 1986.
